Kid-Friendly Version

For the toddler, serve a few plain potato dumplings, a small piece of smoked meat cut into tiny cubes, and a separate spoonful of cabbage (rinsed briefly under warm water to reduce tang).

Recipe

1

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat.

2

Peel the potatoes and dice them into 2 cm cubes, then boil for 15–20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and let cool slightly.

child_care Set aside a few plain potato cubes for the child before mashing.
3

Mash the potatoes in a large bowl, then mix in the flour, semolina, egg, and 0.5 tsp salt until a soft dough forms. Shape into a log, then cut into 3 cm pieces and roll each into an oval dumpling (šiška).

child_care Let the child help shape a small plain dumpling from the dough before adding seasonings.
4

Drop the dumplings into the boiling water and cook for 8–10 minutes until they float to the surface. Remove with a slotted spoon and keep warm.

child_care Set aside 2–3 plain dumplings for the child.
5

While the dumplings cook, dice the smoked pork into 1 cm cubes. In a separate skillet, melt 20 g butter over medium heat and sauté the diced onion for 3–4 minutes until translucent.

child_care For the child, reserve a few plain meat cubes and sauté separately without onion.
6

Add the smoked meat to the skillet and cook for 5–6 minutes until lightly browned. Stir in the sauerkraut, caraway seeds, sugar, and 0.5 tsp pepper. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

child_care Rinse a portion of sauerkraut under warm water to reduce sourness for the child, then mix with a little butter.
7

Melt the remaining 20 g butter in a small pan and pour over the dumplings. Serve the dumplings alongside the meat and cabbage mixture.

child_care Plate the child's dumplings, meat cubes, and mild cabbage separately.
